💼 Intern Guys↗ is...

“A platform for students to find internships—one that is less painful, less stressful, and less time-consuming while remaining efficient.”

✍ What I Did...

Providing Context

When you’re a college student venturing into the job market,
you know, it’s the trenches...

  • On average, students spend about 6 months searching before securing their first internship.
  • Many students submit 50 ~ 100 applications before securing a position in the tech industry.
  • Approximately 45% of applications get ghosted by companies.

The grass is not greener on the other (recruiter) side...

  • On average, a typical tech internship posting can receive 200+ applications.
  • Only 30% ~ 50% of these applicants meet the basic qualifications for the role.
  • Recruiters have time to review just 25% ~ 30% of all submitted applications.

FEAR NOT! Intern Guys is here to help!

  • Bridging the gap between students and employers.
  • Streamlining the application process for more transparency and efficiency.
  • Matching students to ideal roles and helping employers find top candidates.

✨ Recruiter Portal

A major project I tackled was designing the recruiter user flow and prototype for Intern Guys’ website. It all began with...

One Big Scary Question:

Luckily, I had the help of my trusty friend competitive analysis.
I evaluated 4 major job posting websites and identified key strengths and gaps. I found that while platforms like Handshake excel at university partnerships, others like WayUp and LinkedIn offer valuable entry-level talent pools but lack advanced screening tools.

With these insights gathered from my research, the big scary question comes down into a 🎀 conquerable question 🎀

From 0-1: Application Management screens

Drawing from my research insights, I took on the task of designing the application management screens for the recruiter portal. I created two layouts: a card view and a list view.
Both were designed to highlight matched qualifications / percentages, simplify applicant status management, and integrate advanced filtering tools, allowing recruiters to efficiently navigate their candidate pipelines.

✨ Student Profile - New Features

How might we enhance transparency in the internship application process for students so that they can stay informed about the status and progress of their applications?

Applied Status (Version 1)

  • Allows students to track the status of their internship applications, including updates on when applications are reviewed, moved to the next stage, or rejected.

Problem

  • "Declined" or "Offered" statuses were not being documented by recruiters, and the system will not be notified if students' statuses have changed.

Problem:
'declined' or 'offered' statuses were not being documented by recruiters, and the system will not be notified if students' statuses have changed.

Applied Status (Version 2)

  • Allows students to manually update their application status to "Offered" or "Declined".
  • Removed "Withdraw Application" button.

How might we help students to showcase their qualifications to enhance their prospects for future jobs?

✅ Reviews from employers

  • Enables previous employer managers to leave reviews on students' profiles, highlighting their performance and enhancing their credibility in securing future job opportunities.

Open Position Card - New Features

How might we provide students with a more comprehensive view of companies during their internship search so that they can make informed decisions about where to apply?

Company Ratings

  • Allows students to access detailed company reviews, including ratings on work-life balance, interview difficulty, and overall company culture.

Problem:
'declined' or 'offered' statuses were not being documented by recruiters, and the system will not be notified if students' statuses have changed.

✨ Reflection

How did working in a startup environment impact your internship experience?

Being in a startup allowed me direct communication with all team members, including the CEO and engineers. This fostered a dynamic work environment where ideas flowed freely and decisions were made quickly. It gave me a holistic view of how a startup operates and allowed me to contribute meaningfully to various aspects of projects.

How did Agile methodology influence your approach to tasks and projects?

Agile methodology taught me the importance of flexibility and adaptability. Embracing iterative development cycles helped me respond effectively to changing project requirements and user feedback. It encouraged collaboration and enabled rapid adjustments, ensuring that our solutions were always aligned with stakeholder expectations.

How does your internship experience prepare you for your future role?

My internship equipped me with practical skills in prototyping, user research, and optimizing user experiences. Beyond technical skills, it taught me the significance of keeping an open mindset and adapting swiftly to evolving circumstances. This experience has prepared me to contribute effectively and innovate in future roles, particularly in fast-paced and evolving industries like tech and startups.
